F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real
Have you heard this expression before?
We experience fear because our reptilian brain is wired to warn us of danger. Historically, fear protected us from real physical threats—like sabre-toothed tigers. Today, our bodies still trigger that same fight-or-flight response, even when the obstacles we face aren’t life-threatening.
Research on the subconscious shows that whatever gets suppressed eventually gets expressed. So while fear may be misleading, it is real in the body. That’s why I invite you to consider aligning with fear instead of demonizing it.
Fear often presents a distorted picture—but ignoring or denying it can be just as dangerous as reacting to it. When we suppress fear, that repressed energy creates invisible mental blocks that restrict access to our most advanced cognitive faculties.
Instead of running from fear, a more resourceful strategy is to identify it, understand it, face it, and release it.
Joseph Campbell said it best:
“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”
Below is the simple 5-step process I personally use whenever I’m stepping toward a new level, especially when fear is present.
1) FIND THE CAVE
Identify the limitation that’s been keeping you from your next level. Then ask:
“What has this limitation cost me? My family? My community? My legacy?”
High achievers often underestimate the silent tax of hesitation.
2) DECIDE
Write a clear declaration of the first step you will take into the cave.
Include a deadline.
Commitment without a timeline is simply a wish.
3) IDENTIFY THE TREASURE
The treasure is twofold:
• The strength it takes to enter the cave.
• The expanded life that becomes available as a result.
Envision the upgrade—not just for you, but for everyone your leadership touches.
4) JUST DO IT
Prime your subconscious by smiling and saying, “I am excited.”
Visualize the best-case outcome.
Your subconscious doesn’t distinguish between what’s real and what’s imagined.
Anxiety and excitement create similar physical signals—you may as well leverage the one that serves you.
If you don’t program your mind, your mind will program you.
5) CELEBRATE
Acknowledge the win.
Tell yourself, “I frickin’ rock!”
Celebration releases powerful neurochemicals that reinforce your next level of action.
So there it is, your map to the treasure.
The question is: will you use it?
Wherever you are on your journey of transforming fear into fuel, I’m wishing you a day filled with clarity, awareness, and the courage to rise to your next level of greatness.
